Perham-Dent Public Schools has a proud history of showing up for its students, and this November, our school board is asking voters to consider a new way to bring state dollars home for our district: an operating levy that takes advantage of Minnesota’s new Seasonal Recreation Tax Base Replacement Aid program.
Because our area has such a high share of seasonal recreation property — cabins and vacation homes — the district can now qualify for state aid covering up to half of a voter-approved operating levy. In the past, a levy like this may have placed too much of the burden on year-round residents and businesses. This new program finally levels the playing field, giving Perham-Dent a responsible way to invest in students without asking our community to shoulder the full cost.
If approved, the levy would generate about $745,965 in new revenue each year for the next 10 years at $1,135 per student with close to half of that funding coming directly from the State of Minnesota. Just as important, the school board has committed to reducing other local levies if the referendum passes, so most residents would see an overall decrease in their property taxes. Taxes on seasonal recreation properties would remain unchanged.
Operating levies fund the day-to-day work of educating our students, including academics, student services, activities, and the teachers and staff who make it all possible. Before bringing this question to voters, the school board reviewed district finances, enrollment trends, and program needs, and consulted with financial advisors to design a plan that maximizes state support while minimizing local tax impact.
This is an important community decision, and the district will be sharing information to help potential voters understand this plan. Stay tuned for more information, including a dedicated referendum website, this fall. Early voting begins Friday, September 18, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. We encourage every Perham-Dent voter to learn more, ask questions, and make a plan to vote.
